In the United States, flooding is the No. 1 natural disaster, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. With the runoff of melting snow this spring, now is a good time to assess how well you are protected against flooding. A basic homeowners' or business insurance policy covers damage caused by storms, such as leaky roofs, fallen tree limbs and broken pipes. But typically, it does not cover damage due to flooding, or what is known as "rising water".
