How to help people in our community

Published by the Downtown Colorado Springs Partnership:

Give a gift to those who help strengthen our community by serving folks in need. Here are some ideas.

Think HOT, as in Homeless Outreach Team. Their recommendations on how to help the homeless in our community is to support any or all of these organizations:

Homeward Pikes Peak http://www.homewardpikespeak.org/

Pikes Peak United Way http://www.ppunitedway.org/

 Catholic Charities http://www.ccharitiescs.org/

Ecumenical Social Ministries http://www.ecusocmin.org/

The New Hope Shelter http://www.tsacs.org/services.html

Springs Rescue Mission http://mysrm.org/

If you're not sure just who or what you'd like to support this season, check out the Indy Give drive running through the end of year. You'll have your pick of 40 nonprofits (who says you have to pick only one?!) - from arts and culture, to animals, to youth, environment and more. The more you contribute, the greater the cool rewards you'll earn. Visit www.indygive.com to learn more, and make an easy one-time online donation.

Winter months are often the toughest for our neighbors who struggle to heat their homes and keep food on the table. You can give them a holiday smile by supporting these efforts:

Project Cope - utilities payment assistance. http://www.projectcopecs.org

Care and Share Food Bank - filling food pantries across the region. In addition to much needed cash donations, you can also host a food Drive, volunteer at a facility, or even help in the community garden. www.careandshare.org

The 28th annual Gazette-El Pomar Foundation Empty Stocking Fund provides resources for 15 local health and human service agencies dedicated to helping people in crisis and assisting others in attaining self-sufficiency. In 2010, the Empty Stocking Fund raised more than $1 million and hopes to do it again this year to meet the growing demand for services in our community. You can make a secure online donation and/or participate by attending one of the many community events occurring this holiday season, from which a portion of proceeds is donated.
